Diemersdal Grüner Veltliner 2013
By Christian Eedes, 9 August 2014
Why Grüner Veltliner, Austria’s signature white wine grape? “Because I personally like it,” says Thys Louw of Durbanville property Diemersdal. And so 3ha of vineyard were established in 2009, the first and only plantings in the country, with the 2013 vintage being the first to be bottled.
Floral perfume, some spice and a vague petrol-like note on the nose. Fruit forward on the palate with nicely coated acidity. Perhaps not as concentrated and long as it might be but unquestionably a solid first effort. Price: R70.
