“Charming” isn’t a term you apply to South African Merlot very often but that’s precisely what the 2011 from Paarl cellar Glen Carlou is.

The wine spent 15 months in French oak barrels, 40% new and has a smart analysis: Abv 14%, RS 1.9g/l, TA 5.7g/l and pH 3.47.

Red and black cherry, some floral fragrance and subtle oak spice on the nose. Medium bodied with succulent fruit, bright acidity and fine tannins. No great concentration or complexity but entirely appealing – certainly nothing green about it. More than reasonably priced at R79.99 a bottle from TOPS at SPAR.
