Hoopenburg Integer Chardonnay 2009

By , 21 May 2012

Carefully conceived.

Hoopenburg in Stellenbosch seemed to be turning the corner when winemaker Neil Hawkins came across from Robertson Winery in 2005 but he left for Australia during 2009 (to be replaced by Anton Beukes) and the farm’s profile has dipped once again. Over the weekend, two new releases:

Hoopenburg Bushvine Pinot Noir 2009: 14/20 (see related posting and comments on Grape.co.za)
Approximate retail price: R90
Dark cherry fruit on the nose and palate but generally appears thin, overtly acidic and tannic to the point of bitter.

Hoopenburg Integer Chardonnay: 16/20
Approximate retail price: R90
Aromas and flavours of ripe citrus, subtle vanilla and oatmeal. The palate displays good fruit concentration and tangy acidity. Well balanced (oaking particularly astute) with a long, dry finish.
