Not one but two extraordinary wines from Franschhoek Semillon in the space of a week – first the Boekenhoutskloof 2012 (see here) and then the Landau du Val Semillon 2012.

From an unirrigated, bushvine vineyard planted in 1906, the wine was made by Wynand Grobler of Rickety Bridge, the wine matured for 12 months in 225-litre barrels, about 30% new.

It’s oxidative in a good way – yellow peach, Golden Delicious apple, honey, spice as well as some multigrain complexity (“Pro Nutro” was one descriptor I found myself using!). There’s great fruit concentration which makes for real presence in the mouth, while the acidity is moderate but not lacking and the finish is long and savoury. R200 a bottle from the farm.

Score: 94/100.
