Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon 1975

By , 14 May 2013

On the Sunday afternoon prior to the start of judging for the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show, the traditional “Old Wines Tasting”.

One of the wines of the line-up was the Meerlust Cabernet Sauvignon 1975. Great colour – dark red with a pale rim, still clear and bright. Red and black fruit, some leafiness, some subtle tertiary character. Pure and still very much intact with fresh acidity and a little tannic grip remaining.

“Balance, energy and volume,” said Tom Carson, winemaker at Yabby Lake in Australia and one of the international judges this year. “It will go on but won’t go further,” said Oz Clarke, UK wine writer and broadcaster and another of the international judges, wanting just a little more richness.

Score: 90/100.
