Rickety Bridge Paulina’s Reserve Chenin Blanc 2010

By , 27 July 2012

Not short on mid-palate.

It appears that Rickety Bridge in Franschhoek is a cellar on the rise.  First a place in the Christian Eedes Cabernet Sauvignon Report 2012 top 10 for the Paulina’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 and then a silver medal for the Paulina’s Reserve Chenin Blanc 2010 at this year’s Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show.

The other night, I revisited the Chenin. It includes fruit mainly from Worcester (!) as well as a small portion from Elgin, 30% for 6 months in barrel, of which 25% was new. The wine has great fruit expression (peach through to pineapple) and bright acidity but what really impresses is the thick but not unctuous texture. Winemaker Wynand Grobler (ex Rust en Vrede and Ernie Els Wines) relates that he adds no sulfur until bottling and stirs the lees regularly to achieve this effect. Score: 17/20 and at R68 a bottle, great quality relative to price.
