Rickety Bridge Paulina’s Reserve Semillon 2009

Pride of Franschhoek.

Pride of Franschhoek.

Does Franschhoek make enough of its Semillon? Top of the pile is that from Boekenhoutskloof but the more you explore other examples, the more it appears that this is a local speciality. It typically presents in a fashion unlike that grown anywhere else in the country showing more yellow fruit and possessing a comforting richness.

Most recently the Paulina’s Reserve 2009 from Rickety Bridge  Grapes from 23 year old vines grown in sandy soils on the banks of the Franschhoek river, the wine was fermented and matured for nine months in French oak, 20% new.

White peach, some waxiness, a hint of spice. Also a certain earthiness. Medium bodied and particularly fresh. Intense but not overly weighty with a nicely savoury finish. Subtle and sophisticated and great value at R90 a bottle.

Score: 90/100.
