Spice Route Grenache 2012

By , 13 March 2014

Hip and happening.

Hip and happening.

Further evidence how “on trend” Grenache is comes with the release of the maiden vintage 2012 (R90 a bottle) from Spice Route owned by the ever canny Charles Back. The wine comes from Swartland vineyards planted in 2008. Some of the fermentation occurred in tank and the rest in concrete and maturation lasted 15 months in old oak.

The wine shows more black fruit than red as well as some earth and spice. It has a hot climate-broadness about it, the acidity quite soft and no overt tannic grip. Pleasant enough but a bit foursquare. However, the question is: Are we glad there’s another Grenache on the market? The answer is: Yes, we are.

Score: 86/100.
