How to attract younger consumers who are not tied to the traditions that usually govern wine? De Krans in Calitzdorip has launched a Moscato Perlé 2013 – light (only 9% alcohol), sweet, softly fizzy, under screwcap and only R30 a bottle.

 It’s bound to find favour with a certain sector of the market (Muscato recently overtook Sauvignon Blanc as the third most popular variety in the US behind Chardonnay and Pinot Gris/Grigio) but it’s not exactly a wine of contemplation and a score is pretty much besides the point…
