De Krans Tritonia White 2017
By Christian Eedes, 5 July 2019
The Tritonia White 2017 from De Krans in Calitzdorp is bonkers. It consists of 63% Malvasia Rei (or Palamino), this from a vineyard planted in 1947 originally used to produce brandy and 37% Verdelho. The two varieties were vinified separately – fermentation of the Malvasia begun on the skins in lagar before being transferred to tank while the Verdelho was fermented and matured for four months in barrel.
The nose shows orange, dried herbs, nuttiness and rancio while the palate is rich and flavourful – good fruit concentration matched by tangy acidity (alcohol: 13%). Whatever else you might say about it, it’s certainly not dull! Price: R150 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 89/100.
