Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Chenin Blanc 2015

Size matters.

The 2014 vintage of the Vineyard Selection Chenin Blanc from Stellenbosch producer won the trophy for best in class at the Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show last year and the 2015 is right up there again.

Intense white and yellow peach plus honeysuckle, spice and a little leesy complexity. The palate is flavour-packed, rich and full in structure but not short of freshness, while the finish is nicely savoury. Some vintages can be borderline OTT but in the case of the 2015, everything comes together for good. Extraordinary quality relative to price at R77 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 91/100.

You’re dead right Christian. We have much to be grateful for. Pity so many still opt for the regular restaurant plonk, without realizing such great quality can be bought in the same price bracket. Seems a laborious task getting family and friends to move onto something new. Perhaps they’ve been brainwashed? Shame on them.

Hi Lloyd, It’s inevitable that you’re going to get some consumers who are highly involved with the subject of wine and those who are less so. While it can be frustrating when others don’t share our interest in a topic that we consider so obviously fascinating and rewarding, I don’t think we should sit in judgement but rather seek to engage. The Swartland Revolution and all that has gone with that demonstrates very well what can be achieved….

Hi Lloyd, Chenin really is a national treasure. The amount of fantastic wine for sub-R100 a bottle is amazing. Kleine Zalze nails it but so do Ken Forrester, Perdeberg and Stellenrust to name a few…

Hi Christian. Surely this is South Africa’s best value white? I remember picking up the 2014 (quite rich, but very good regardless) for R55 from an Ultra Liquors outlet. Considering just how rubbish the Rand is, they’re practically giving this beautiful wine away. We need to keep this a little hush hush me thinks.
