Longridge Ou Steen Chenin Blanc 2023
By Christian Eedes, 26 April 2024
Ou Steen Chenin Blanc from Stellenbosch cellar Longridge is typically made in a semi-sweet style, the immediate reference being Vouvray Demi-Sec. It’s not a take on Chenin that you come across often locally but the current-release 2023 (R520 a bottle) is worth seeking out, suited to a plate of cheese at the end of the meal.
Grapes from a block planted in 1981 and 0.6ha in size, the wine was matured for 10 months in 500-litre barrels. Marmalade, herbs, hay and a touch of reduction on the nose precede a well-balanced palate that shows dense fruit and lemon-like acidity, the finish chalky in texture. Tightly wound, this should mature with benefit. Alc: 12.5%, RS: 14.4g/l, TA: 6.1g/l, pH 3.16.
CE’s rating: 94/100.
