“Do you agree with Tim Atkin’s scores?” was the question posed by the media release issued on behalf of KWV, many of the wines having been scored 90 points or more by the UK Master of Wine in his recent South Africa Special Report. An invitation was extended to pick any of the Mentors range to taste alongside Atkin’s ratings and the wines not previously rated on this site were duly dispatched.

KWV The Mentors Sauvignon Blanc 2014
Price: R165
W.O. Elim. Some reduction before notes of green bean, lime and a little granadilla. Quite awkward on the palate –thick in texture but also seering acidity. Made to impress but ultimately lacks grace.

Winemag rating: 88/100.
Tim Atkin rating: 92/100.

KWV The Mentors Chenin Blanc 2014

Paarl rocks.

KWV The Mentors Chenin Blanc 2014
Price: R165
W.O. Paarl. White peach through pineapple plus bee’s wax, wet wool and spice on the nose. Concentrated fruit, fresh acidity and a gently savoury finish. Nicely judged – not too heavy, not too oaky. Layers of flavour, the finish long and gently savoury.

Winemag rating: 93/100.
Tim Atkin rating: 93/100.

KWV The Mentors Grenache Blanc 2014
Price: R165
W.O. Paarl. Citrus and peach, some leesy character plus an unusual terpene note. A very polished wine with good depth of flavour and nicely coated acidity. A touch of earthiness lends interest.

Winemag rating: 92/100.
Tim Atkin rating: 93/100.

KWV The Mentors Pinotage 2013
Price: R265
W.O. Coastal Region. Black fruit, toasty and a touch of spice. Super-ripe, super-extracted and rather joyless.

Winemag rating: 87/100.
Tim Atkin rating: 90/100.

The Grenache Blanc was never discontinued. Mentors wines are only bottled when judged by the wine team to be of high enough quality to bear the KWV Mentors name. 2012 and 2013 vintages of the Grenache Blanc did not and were as a result never bottled.

Was the Grenache Blanc not discontinued for a couple of years? If so, what an apparent corporate brain fart – and welcome back!
