Over the weekend, the new premium tier of wines called The Dry Land Collection from Perderberg. The winery stiuated between Durbanville and Malmesbury is famed for offering great quality relative to price and these wines again don’t disappoint.

Perdeberg The Dry Land Collection Sauvignon Blanc 2013
Price: R62
Lime and a subtle cut-grass character. Lighter style with bright acidity and a particularly dry finish.

Perdeberg The Dry Land Collection Chenin Blanc 2013
Price: R62
White and yellow peach as well as a hint of guava. Good concentration and crisp acidity. Everything that’s good about unwooded Chenin from dry-land bush vines.

Perdeberg The Dry Land Collection Barrel Fermented Chenin Blanc 2011
Price: R68
Wonderfully complex –  citrus, peach, a pronounced note of roasted almonds plus waxy, leesy notes. Rich and flavourful with a good line of acidity and a pity finish, the overall impression savoury rather than sweet. Caused me to instantly recall the Rex Equus 2008 from this winery which won the 2011 Chenin Blanc Challenge.

Perdeberg The Dry Land Collection Pinot Noir/Chardonnay 2013
Price: R62
Coppery pink in colour. Very lightly fruity (lemon through strawberry) but admirably dry.

Perdeberg The Dry Land Collection Shiraz 2011
Price: R75
Good complexity – dark fruit plus fynbos, spice, liquorice and earth. Dense and smooth textured but acidity sufficient to ensure that the wine doesn’t become unbalanced or listless. Very satisfying.

Perdeberg The Dry Land Collection Pinotage 2011
Price: R75
Modest but likeable with red cherry and subtle vanilla in evidence. Medium bodied with bright acidity and soft tannins.

Perdeberg The Dry Land Collection Cabernet Sauvignon 2011
Price: R75
Appears very ripe – cassis but also prunes and a slightly malty note. Rich and broad with soft tannins. Not unpleasant but lacklustre compared to its stablemates.

Perdeberg The Dry Land Collection Joshua’s Legacy 2010
Price: R80
A tribute to Joseph Huskisson, winemaker at Perdeberg from 1956 to 1994. 40% Shiraz, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Red and black fruit plus attractive spice. Very ripe but just about balanced and not short on character.
