Eight is enough.

Spier Creative Block 8 2010 (R115 a bottle from the tasting room) is a blend of 30% Pinotage, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Shiraz, 10% Merlot, 10% Malbec, 5% Mourvèdre, 3% Barbera and 2% Viognier.  Cellarmaster Frans Smit and assistant red winemaker Tania Kleintjies are somewhat bemused that it didn’t perform better at last year’s Perold Absa Cape Blend competition but consider what did win, namely  Beyerskloof Faith 2009, KWV Perold Tributum 2010 and Windmeul Reserve Cape Blend 2010, and this wine was surely too exotic to stand a chance. It’s kind of “Mediterranean” in style with notes of red fruit, fynbos and spice to go with oak-derived vanilla and I like how unconventional it is. Score: 16.5/20.
