The Drift Moveable Feast 2014

Party on.

It doesn’t get more exotic than this 36% Syrah, 27% Malbec, 14% Tannat, 14% Touriga Nacional and 9% Barbera 2014 blend but Bruce Jack of Flagstone repute is not one to play it by the book. Grapes from the Overberg family farm, vinification involved partial whole-bunch fermentation before maturation lasting 18 months in French oak, 10% new.

The nose shows a floral top note before dark fruit, some earthiness, herbs and spice plus a slight malty quality. The palate, meanwhile, is rich and dense with tart acidity and smooth tannins. It’s very expressive if rather forceful – closed under screwcap, the second half of the bottle was that much better a day later. Alc: 14%. Price: R385 a bottle.

Editor’s rating: 91/100.
