A riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma

There are Still Mysteries Pinot Noir 2015 from Bruce Jack’s farm The Drift outside Napier in the Southern Cape won a gold award in the recent Wine Label Design Awards and what’s inside is pretty smart, too.

Grapes from a registered single vineyard planted in 2002 at 450m above sea level, vinification involved 30% whole-bunch fermentation before maturation typically lasting between 12 and 18 months in mostly old oak.

The nose shows some rose-like perfume before red cherry, wild strawberry and fresh herbs with a not unpleasant hint of reduction in the background. The palate is juicy and fresh with fine, not too grippy tannins. The wine is not without depth (alcohol is 13.5%) but it’s nicely proportioned, clean and correct. Price: R583 a bottle.
