Julien Schaal Evidence Chardonnay 2023
By Christian Eedes, 23 December 2024
Though the alcohol may be a modest 12.5%, the Evidence Chardonnay 2023 from Julien and Sophie Schaal (Alsace based but long-time SA producers, too) doesn’t lack for power. Grapes from one of the oldest vineyards planted to this variety in Elgin, the wine was matured for 12 months in barrel, 25% new.
Peach, lemon and orange plus a light nutty note on the nose while the palate is rich and full with a creamy texture, tangy acidity lending verve, the finish savoury. It’s a wine of presence rather than opulence – good fruit definition and full of flavour. Price: R370 a bottle.
CE’s rating: 93/100.
