The Signature Series wines from Sadie Family Wines incorporate multiple varieties from multiple sites, and as such, are quintessentially “regional” – the Swartland in all its vastness and diversity captured in a bottle, one red and the other white.

Columella 2023
Price: R1,300
Syrah, Mourvèdre, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsaut, Tinta Barocca and Pinotage. Matured for 12 months in oak barrels, of which 5% were new, before a further 12 months in foudre. Red and black berries, pomegranate, olive, fynbos, violets, earth and spice on the nose. The palate has good fruit definition and weight, fresh acidity and fine tannins, the finish savoury. Dark and brooding, impressive in depth and structure, but currently a bit unyielding and not immediately easy to love. Alc: 13.5%.

CE’s rating: 94/100.

Palladius 2023
Price: R1,245

From Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Verdelho, Roussanne, Marsanne, Semillon Gris, Semillon Blanc, Palomino, Colombard, Grillo, Assyrtiko, Grenache Blanc and Verdelho. Matured for 12 months in amphorae and concrete eggs before a further 12 months in foudre. The nose is reticent with subtle notes of white, green and yellow fruit, herbs, hay, earth and reduction. The palate shows dense fruit to go with a great line of acidity, the finish long and pithy. Self-contained, nuanced, and undeniably classy. Alc: 13.5%.

CE’s rating: 96/100.

Looking forward to the Sadie Family’s latest Columella, Palladius and the District Series being reviewed by a qualified panel tasting ‘blind’, i.e. given the obvious limitations (shortcomings?) of ratings by individuals with the labels in front of them…

Not a fan then, Mike? What are you hoping to achieve by this? I think Sadie wines are universally recognised to be world class and we should be celebrating them as such and be proud of these wines. There is a lot of blood, sweat, tears, money, science, etc, etc, that goes into producing these wines and they’re bloody fantastic. We might all have our preferences and CE and TA’s score reflect this, but your comment seems to indicate that we’ve been bought into the hype.

Blind taste them by all means, but im pretty sure against other world class wines, they will do just fine.

Trying to read too much into my comment you are, James. Love and respect Sadie Family Wines, I do. Would just love to see these world-class wines shine in tastings where the panels aren’t aware of their identities up front.
