“The Signature range is the absolute focus of what we do,” says Chris Mullineux of the eponymous Swartland label and volumes of the new releases are substantial: 20,850 bottles of Old Vines White, 15,414 of Syrah and 3,510 of Straw.

Old Vines White 2025
Price: R470
70% Chenin Blanc, 11% Clairette Blanche, 8% Viognier, 6% Grenache Blanc, 5% Semillon Gris. A complex nose of pear, peach, guava and apple, with floral and herbal nuances plus a touch of reduction. The palate is rich and textured – almost chewy, if a white can be – showing impressive concentration, moderate acidity and a gently savoury finish. Harmonious, though arguably a little weighty. Alc: 14%.

CE’s rating: 93 | Serious

Syrah 2023
Price: R470
From six vineyards, three on schist, two on granite and one on iron. Aromatics of cranberry, raspberry, orange, olive, fynbos and white pepper. Pure fruit, not without heft, snappy acidity and powdery tannins. Well balanced, seamless, polished in the best sense. Alc: 13%.

CE’s rating: 95 | Serious

Straw Wine 2025
Price: R755 per 375ml bottle
Grapes dried for several weeks prior to pressing. The nose shows sultana, marmalade, honey and straw. The palate is intensely sweet and viscous, with luscious fruit offset by big acidity. A particularly powerful, opulent vintage. Alc: 7.5%.

CE’s rating: 92 | Luxurious

What is lacking with regards to the Straw Wine compared to last year?

Hi Josua, Though there is little to choose between the two vintages in terms of analysis, the 2024 Straw Wine (96/100) thrilled with lively acidity, while the 2025 version (92/100) is rich and luscious but less dynamic. You could say that opulence is the very essence of Straw Wine, yet I find the 2025 release slightly over the top.

I like the addition of the one word comment next to the score! Thanks for the review
