The Chocolate Block 2019

The Chocolate Block from Boekenhoutskloof has always been at least sound, and in the case of 2017 rather accomplished, but the 2019 seems slightly ingratiating, conceived to please as many as possible – and with production at 2 414 barriques as the label makes clear, then perhaps the producer is compelled not to make the wine too difficult…

Consisting of 71% Syrah, 11% Grenache, 9% Cinsault, 8% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Viognier, the nose shows red and black berries, some floral fragrance, spice and a hint of toasty oak while the palate presents as somewhat sweet and soft. It initially gives the impression of luxuriousness with good depth of fruit (alcohol is 14.69%) but ultimately comes across as a bit cloying – it’s not a bad wine so much as inauthentic. Price: R245 a bottle.
