Boplaas Cape Vintage Reserve 2020

“Careful cellaring over the next few decades will result in a most rewarding experience,” reads the back label of the Cape Vintage Reserve 2020 from Calitzdorp property Boplaas and it certainly felt somewhat heretical to broach it now but even at this early stage, its class is evident.

From Touriga Franca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca and Souzao, the aromatics are compelling with notes of red and black berries, floral perfume, fynbos, liquorice chocolate and spice while the palate is marked by good fruit definition and fine tannins. It’s well balanced, the spirit addition in particular sensitively handled. Great focus and refinement, it should make for excellent drinking from 2032 onwards. Price: R350 a bottle.
