Boekenhoutskloof The Journeyman 2009

Not at all workmanlike.

Is Franschhoek capable of some of South Africa’s very best wine? The Journeyman is an effort by the Boekenhoutskloof team to prove that it’s possible. The 2009 is a blend of 67% Cabernet Franc from Boekenhoutskoof’s own vineyards and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon from Eikehof and it spent 27 months in French oak, 100% new.

On the nose, there’s red fruit and subtle vanilla as well as more hard-to-describe notes that usually get lumped under “cigar box” and “oyster shell”. The palate, meanwhile, is medium bodied with pure fruit, moderate acidity and well integrated wine. It’s subtle and finely crafted which you have to admire but I kind of wished it had a little more punch. Score: 17/20.


  1. Yes, it can. Stony Brook Ghost Gum, Rickety Bridge “The Bridge”, Chamonix Pinot Noir, La Motte Shiraz, L’Ormarins Optima to name a few… and the BHK Cab is also awesome
