The Big Easy 2013 from Ernie Els Wines does what it says on the label being extraordinarily approachable. It’s a blend of 61% Shiraz, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Grenache, 6% Mourvèdre, 4% Cinsaut and 4% Viognier and I think it’s clever. It obviously takes its cue from Chocolate Block made by Boekenhoutskloof but comes in quite a bit cheaper at R140 a bottle compared to around R220.
On the nose, red and black berries plus a little fynbos while the palate is fruit-packed, not lacking in freshness but the tannins pushed right back. Serve with peri-peri chicken burgers and your favourite TV series.
