By , 15 June 2018

The maiden 2016 vintage Metzer Family Chenin Blanc from a 1964 vineyard in the foothills of Stellenbosch’s Helderberg mountain of was a fine effort on the part of winemaker Wade Metzer and in 2017, he secured another site of age in the district, allowing him to make two versions of the variety. Tasting notes and ratings as follows:

Metzer “Montane” Chenin Blanc 2017
Approximate retail price: R240
Now designated as “Montane”. Naartjie and stone fruit plus hints of ginger and other spice. The palate is relatively thick textured despite a lowish alcohol of 12.9%, tangy acidity lending verve while the finish has a pleasant orange-rind-like bitter quality to it.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.

Metzer Family “Maritime” Chenin Blanc 2017
Approximate retail price: R240
From a 1981 vineyard situated some five kilometres from the shores of False Bay and hence the name. Matured for eight months in old oak. A very pretty nose with top notes of blossom and hay before pear, white peach and lemon. Lovely fruit purity and driving acidity before a pithy finish – really vivid. Alcohol: 13.5%.

Editor’s rating: 95/100.
