Metzer new releases
By Christian Eedes, 16 April 2020
Wade Metzer is rapidly establishing himself as one of the top exponents of Chenin Blanc in the country if he hasn’t already. Tasting notes and ratings for his new releases as follows:
Metzer Maritime Chenin Blanc 2018
Approximate retail price: R275
Grapes from a 1980 vineyard situated 4km from the shore of False Bay. A complex nose with notes of citrus, yellow peach, even some pineapple plus a little earthiness and yeasty character. The palate has great depth and richness with nicely tangy acidity and a slightly bitter finish. Has a pleasant oxidative quality to it.
CE’s rating: 94/100.
Metzer Montane Chenin Blanc 2018
Approximate retail price: R330
Grapes from a 1964 vineyard on the foothills of the Helderberg. A top note of blossom before lime, green apple and white peach with notes of flinty reduction and wet wool in the background. Extraoridinary fruit concentration and flavour intensity to go with arresting acidity and a pithy finish – not too light despite an alcohol of 12.8% and greatly energetic.
CE’s rating: 96/100.
Metzer Cinsault 2018
Approximate retail price: R300
From a 1964 vineyard planted on the foothills of the Helderberg West peak. 30% whole-bunch fermentation. Aromatics of raspberry and fresh herbs including mint. Light bodied and slightly sour with grippy tannins. Characterful but not quite as assured as its counterparts above.
CE’s rating: 90/100.
