Mother Rock is a collaboration between winemaker Johan “Stompie” Meyer and Ben Henshaw of London wine merchant Indigo. Their everyday drinking Force Majeure wines have been around for a while now but today saw the maiden release of six first-label wines, all grapes sourced from exceptional parcels in the Swartland and made as naturally as possible but with “a focus on clarity and cleanliness”.

Mother Rock White 2015
Approximate retail price: R130
61% Chenin Blanc, 16% Viognier, 11% Grenache, 8% Semillon and 4% Hárslevelű. Spotaneous fermentation and matured for 10 months in old oak. An expressive nose of pear, white peach, naartjie (mandarin), spice and some yeasty complexity. Pure fruit, racy acidity and a pithy finish. Not too rich or overdone which makes it very accessible but equally wonderfully detailed and balanced.

#WinemagRating: 93/100.

Mother Rock Liquid Skin 2015
Approximate retail price: R180
100% Chenin Blanc, skin contact lasting nine weeks. An unusual but enticing nose of citrus, dried peach and apricot, potpourri, marzipan and spice. Concentrated fruit, fresh acidity and grippy phenolics. Geeky but delicious.

#WinemagRating: 93/100.

Mother Rock Carignan Cinsaut 2015
Approximate retail price: R195
50:50 blend. 100% whole-bunch fermentation, matured for 10 months in old oak. 11.5% abv. Red cherry, wild strawberry and fynbos. Rather slight and angular – extra-bright acidity and a super-dry finish.

#WinemagRating: 89/100.

Mother Rock Grenache 2015
Approximate retail price: R195
100% whole bunch-fermentation, matured for 10 months in old oak. Red fruit, flowers and pink sweets on the nose. The palate is light and fresh – juicy fruit upfront before a gently spicy finish. Well balanced and rather pretty.

#WinemagRating: 90/100.

Mother Rock Syrah 2015

Making mom proud.

Mother Rock Syrah 2015
Approximate retail price: R195
100% whole bunch-fermentation, matured for 10 months in old oak. A gorgeous nose of red and black berries, fynbos, white pepper and hints of spice. The palate has a remarkable exactness about it – lovely purity and freshness while the tannins are fine but not too much so, the wine having just the right amount of presence.

#WinemagRating: 95/100.

Mother Rock Mourvèdre 2015
Approximate retail price: R195

100% whole bunch-fermentation, matured for 10 months in old oak. Typically wild on the nose with earth, smoke and a subtle meaty note to go with black fruit and scrub. Relatively rich compared to the other reds in the range but not short of freshness, the tannins nicely ripe.

#WinemagRating: 91/100.
