Overgaauw Merlot 2011
By Christian Eedes, 25 June 2013
Overgaauw, in the Van Velden family since 1906, is one of those rock-solid Stellenbosch properties – a source of wines understated in style and offering good quality relative to price year in and year out. The new releases have been given a packaging overhaul and very smart they look, too.
Overgaauw Chardonnay 2012 – Price: R84
Citrus and an appealing biscuit-like undertone on the nose and palate. Not super-complex but classically styled – medium-bodied with bright acidity and a nice dry finish.
Overgaauw Merlot 2011 – Price: R103
Red and black fruit and a hint of milk chocolate on the nose and palate. Not green nor overly ripe. Medium bodied with fresh acidity and oak well assimilated – nicely grippy on the finish.
Overgaauw Touriga Nacional 2012 – Price: R80
Suitably exotic with plenty of ripe black fruit and spice. Sweet and juicy on entry, moderate acidity and somewhat coarse tannins but not unpleasantly so.
