The Giant Periwinkle Blanc Fumé 2017

By , 21 February 2019

Pierre Rabie, an advocate by day, has for some time made wine under The Giant Periwinkle label. He recently enlisted fellow advocate Robert Stelzner and Karen van Helden as partners and they have now acquired a property with some 3ha of vineyards near the South Coast town of Baardskeerdersbos, where they have established a cellar and tasting room. Stand-out current-releases as follows:

The Giant Periwinkle Wind Scorpion Sauvignon Blanc 2018
Price: R130
Unwooded. A subtle but appealing nose of lime, green apple and just a little blackcurrant. The palate is remarkably concentrated given alcohol of just 12.2% while there’s also zippy acidity before a long and savoury finish. Ideal as a summer aperitif.

Editor’s rating: 89/100.

The Giant Periwinkle Blanc Fumé 2017
Price: R200
From Elim Sauvignon Blanc. Fermented and matured for seven months in two older 500-litre barrels. A reduction-related smoky top note before lime, peach, black currant and fresh herbs. Great fruit concentration, piercing acidity and a very dry finish. A hardcore rendition that needs a year or more in bottle before showing at its best.

Aerobotics Sauv-Sem Blend/Wooded Sauvignon Blanc Report 2018 rating: 90/100.
