This wine has always offered terrific quality relative to price, the 2016 more so than ever. Grapes predominantly from a 17-year-old Syrah vineyard planted on schist but also including the usual dash of Grenache, the nose has a top note of lavender before red and black berries, olive tapenade and pepper plus a touch of reduction. The palate has dense fruit, bright acidity and just the right amount of tannic grip. Yumbo, which is to say highly pleasant to the senses. Get yours from Wine Cellar for the princely sum of R110 a bottle.
