Vergenoegd Shiraz 1975

Rock ‘n roll.

Yesterday a party at Joostenberg Bistro to celebrate the 40th birthday of Corlien Morris, co-owner of Wine Concepts Gauteng and good friend. To drink, some wines of the 1975 vintage from her father’s cellar, these being Vergenoegd Cabernet Sauvignon, Vergenoegd Shiraz and Zonnebloem Shiraz.

The Vergenoegd Cab and the Zonnebloem did not disgrace themselves but it was the Vergenoegd Shiraz that stood out. Matured for three years in barrel from what I can gather, it showed red fruit, pepper, spice and just a touch of leather on the nose. The palate was rich and full but balanced and though advanced, still very upright. It was a wine to drink more than one glass of.

#WinemagRating: 95/100.

An 82 Vergenoegd Shiraz opened over the weekend was surprisingly good! restrained richness, spice, holding up very well! I think older vintages of this wine are worth looking out for.
