Callie Louw has confirmed that he will soon be leaving the prominent Swartland property Porseleinberg, saying he is ready to “take a chance to fly my own kite.” He has acquired a farm on the Perdeberg with a partner and intends to begin operations there later this year. Owners Boekenhoutskloof declined to comment on his successor or provide further detail.

For the record, Winemag and Marc Kent of Boekenhoutskloof have been estranged for some time, which unfortunately led to some confusion around the brief from us to Tim James in this instance. There was no intention to pre-empt anyone else’s reporting, only to respond swiftly to a developing story with the information available at the time. We appreciate the additional context now provided and remain committed to open and accurate coverage.

Good luck to Callie on his new journey! He deserves a fresh start. 🍷🙏🏼

Damn, Tim coming in the chair from top rope.

If you had waited for the article on this matter that you’d asked me to provide, Christian, before pre-empting it by rushing in with your scarcely informative little piece, you would have realised that the “owners of Boekenhoutskloof”, as you evasively put it, had not declined to comment – but had merely declined to comment in full to you (go figure, as they say).

Under the circumstances, I am not providing the article, but I do offer your readers at least some further information gained from Marc Kent and through further investigation:

    • Callie’s successor as Porseleinberg winemaker will be Eben Meiring, at present working with Gottfried Mocke in the Boekenhoutskloof cellar.
    • Callie’s successor as viticulturist to all the Boekenhoutskloof Swartland properties will be announced once finalised.
    • Gottfried is taking up wider oversight and control winemaking (and more) responsibilities in the Boekenhoutskloof portfolio.
    • Moving into the Boekenhoutskloof cellar will be Ruan van Schalkwyk, from Kanonkop.
    • Callie expects to release wines under his own label in 2028, probably including an old-vine chenin from his new farm (where most of the virused vineyards will be replaced). I am sure we all heartily wish him well in the venture.
