Carl Schultz.

Stellenbosch property Hartenberg has announced the departure of long-serving head winemaker Carl Schultz, the move described as a “mutually agreed and voluntary separation”. He joined the property in November 1993 and has been a member of the Cape Winemakers Guild since 1996.

The farm announced Kelsey Nel as new winemaker in October last year. Nel graduated with an honours degree in viticulture and oenology from Stellenbosch University in 2020.

Earlier in the month, the farm also revealed that it was the first in South Africa – and only the second worldwide – to achieve regenerative verification under the Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) framework.

Hi Carl All the BEST for your new future. Another 31 years in the wine industry

31 years. I cant think of another current winemaker that has been longer at a winery in South Africa.

Interesting point, Dion. I think Gary Jordan is still at Jordan quite importantly if hardly fulltime, and he and Kathy are still listed as cellarmasters in Platter. That dates back to the same year. David Trafford’s first De Trafford wine was ’93 , and I think Jeremy Walker at Grangehurst goes back to 1992 making him the winner! Can’t think of others.

Talk about the end of an era. I wish Carl well with his future endeavours – I’ll still be drinking his wines for many a year to come.

The only thing that I know is that there’s no substitute for experience !!!!
