Francois van Zyl has resigned from Kanonkop, where he had worked since 2022, to pursue his own interests. The news was announced in a post on the Stellenbosch estate’s Facebook page.
Van Zyl was appointed head winemaker at the end of 2024, succeeding Abrie Beeslaar. He joined Kanonkop following owners Johann and Paul Krige’s acquisition of neighbouring property Laibach in 2022, where he had served as winemaker.
His successor at Kanonkop will be announced in due course. Van Zyl was not immediately available for comment.

There must have been some strong disagreements? They pride themselves on the lengthy tenures of their winemakers.

Hi, sad news for you and Kanonkop too.
I wish you the best for you in the future. I believe that your move is little too early!

It’s not so easy to work in a family farming enterprise although the Krige’s owners of Kanononkop will give him the freedom to express himself in the wine industry, still not in line with Francois ambitious .
