Winemag.co.za’s programme of category reports in 2022 will again be sponsored by multinational financial services company Prescient.

Prescient, established in Cape Town in 1998, is a proudly South African company that has grown its operations across a range of financial disciplines to span the world.

We have reduced the number of reports with a view to becoming more efficient and effective. The schedule is as follows:

Round of tastingMonth of publication
1. Chenin Blanc and Cape White Blends/ShirazMay
2. Signature Red BlendsJune
3. Sauvignon Blanc and Sauv-Sem Blends/Cape Bordeaux Red BlendsAugust
4. Chardonnay/Cabernet SauvignonNovember

For full details concerning entry dates, download the following: Winemag.co.za Prescient Report Calendar 2022

How it works

  • We taste blind, labels out of sight and ratings are done according to the 100-point system.
  • A Top 10 per category will be released plus scores for all wines entered – Top 10 stickers and regular rating stickers will be available for producers to purchase and consumers are encouraged to look out for these in the retail environment.
  • The Top 10 performers will be revealed online and celebrated at various awards events throughout the year.

Sorry Christian, Pinotage ist the only original South African grape. You must do tasting reports about this South African gem.
    Kind regards from Switzerland

Keep in mind, Christian tastes very on par with ABSA Top 10 Pinotage – which has garnered a lot of media attention over the last 3 or so years. While I enjoy reading Christian’s reviews, it does become a little competitive and a little too close with ABSA Top 10. When this happens, you have to ask if it is then necessary to have another top 10 platform that has roughly 6/10 of the same wines featuring. Fully with WINEMAG on this one.

Sad to see reduction in Winemag tasting reports. Pity that Cap Classique, Pinotage and Rhone-style blends are among the relegated categories. Can we know how the team chose what to focus on?

Hi Mike, After feedback from various sources, we were concerned that we were providing information overload. The categories we’ve selected to focus on are those where we feel we can make the biggest contribution to debate and help drive the industry forward. Taking our chosen categories one by one, I would make the following comments:

      1. Chenin Blanc – such a vibrant and diverse category that no coverage is too much
      2. Shiraz – SA’s most exciting red grape
      3. Sauvignon Blanc – mass market appeal while Sauv-Sem blends are generally of an extraordinarily high quality and though a small category, deserve to be celebrated
      4. Cape Bordeaux Red Blends – unmatched pedigree and status
      5. Chardonnay – the most famous white variety of them all
      6. Cabernet Sauvignon – the most famous red variety of them all
