SA wine exports 2023

Generic export body Wines of South Africa (WOSA) reports that South African wine exports declined by 17%, in 2023 resulting in total export volumes of 306.3 million litres. Value, meanwhile, dropped by 11% to  US$540 million.

Packaged exports amounted to 117.1 million litres and bulk to 189.2 million, a ratio of 1 to 1.6.

The three biggest countries by value were: 1) United Kingdom; 2) Germany and 3) Netherlands making up a combined 45% of the total.

    Regarding those 189.2m litres of bulk wine: Is there a way in which at least some of those producers can switch to ways to use that scarce water for products with more added value, e.g. table grapes, citrus, mangoes, olives, nuts,…? Has anybody done research on who the wine growers are who do not break even on their wine business? If the bulk producers are profitable, one can understand that they would feel no need to change.
