This year’s Chardonnay tasting to be reported on in the November issue of WINE magazine has attracted 173 examples (28 unwooded and 145 wooded) submissions compared to 150 (19 unwooded and 131 wooded) in 2009.

The panel is Carrie Adams of Johannesburg retailer Norman Goodfellows, wine writer Angela Lloyd, Woolworths wine selector Allan Mullins, JD Pretorius, winemaker at Steenberg in Constantia and me.

Last year’s tasting produced two wines rated 5 Stars (namely Hamilton Russell Vineyards 2008 and Mulderbosch Barrel Fermented 2006) as well as four wines rated 4½ Stars and eight 4 Stars. With wines from the highly rated 2009 now starting to hit the market, expectations are high that results will again be favourable.
