Vergelegen, the prestigious Helderberg property owned by multinational mining company Anglo American, has revised its wine ranges and unveiled a series of new wine labels.

The number of wines has been reduced from 17 to 10. Gone are the following:

Single Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc (Schaapenberg)

Shiraz Premium and Shiraz Reserve

Semillon Reserve

The Vineyard Range (The First Thought Cabernet Sauvignon, The Last Word Cabernet Sauvignon, The Mistake Merlot)

Re-designing the labels has been a three-year project. Vergelegen commissioned illustrators Linda Smal and Rohan Etsebeth to portray characteristic features of the property. The design team has softened the signature octagonal shape of the labels, which was inspired by the historic Octagonal Garden adjoining the homestead.

The new ranges are:

Heritage range: Florence Rosé, Wild Winds Sauvignon Blanc, and Mill Race Red Blend. Retail prices are R150 to R180 per bottle.

Reserve range: Cap Classique, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a price range of R330 to R400 per bottle.

Estate range: Estate White and Estate Red (formerly G.V.B. White and Red), R375 and R550 per bottle.

Icon: V, available by allocation only, R2 000 per bottle. The first vintage in new packaging is 2019, and the annual global release date will be 1 April, starting in 2025.

Don’t be too upset about the Semillon. Yes, it will be missed, but Luke has done a phenomenal job with the Estate White which I was lucky enough to taste last week.

Despite the 2019 V being poured as well, it was the Estate White that I found myself going back for over and over. Maritime notes on the nose, remarkable salinity and minerality, great balance and texture. I already have a bottle waiting at home right now.

      Hi Sean.

I’m not denying the credentials of the White – it’s always been quite iconic, in fact. I still have a 2013, as I like to drink those older. But the Semillon will still be gone forever…

I recently had a 2007 Shiraz. I expected it to be good, but it shone incredibly brightly. It’s a real shame that they’re just going to make rosé from it now, but I suppose Vergelegen is just not that well known for Syrah, and with the ever-growing popularity of rosé, I can understand it – even if I don’t like it.

Agreed, that’s a real shame. I loved that Semillon Reserve.

    Pity about that Semillon Reserve…

So what’s going to happen to the Syrah grapes?
