A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines Red 2014
By Christian Eedes, 4 April 2016
To keep the alcohol down on a red wine but still achieve a flavour profile that shows more black than red fruit is a pretty neat trick to pull off and that’s precisely what Adi Badenhorst has done with his Red 2014.
A blend of 56% Shiraz, 17% Cinsault, 17% Grenache and 10% Tinta Barocca, the wine shows purple flowers, pronounced black fruit, olive and scrub on the nose. The palate meanwhile is lean with very fresh acidity, the tannins fine and not too stemmy despite most of the grapes undergoing wholebunch fermentation. Alcohol by volume on the label is 13% although Badenhorst says it’s actually even lower than that. Wine Cellar price: R285.
