A.A. Badenhorst Red 2018

By , 3 May 2021

The 2019 vintage of the red blend from Swartland producer A.A. Badenhorst Family Wines may have just been released but the 2018 is still available (price: R365 a bottle). Of the two, the 2018 appears slightly lighter in body and more immediately accessible.

From 56% Shiraz, 19% Grenache, 12.5% Cinsault, and 12.5% Tinta Barocca, the nose shows a floral note before red and blackberries, white pepper, and spice while the palate shows pure fruit, lemon-like acidity, and powdery tannins. It’s well balanced and elegant and provides an interesting counterpoint to the 2019 which for me has a touch more depth.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
