Almenkerk new releases

The Almenkerk undertaking was established in 2004 by Joris and Natalie van Almenkerk of Belgian heritage after they swapped corporate careers to farm in Elgin. Cameron Corney, previously assistant to André van Rensburg at Vergelegen, joined as winemaker in August 2022, full of innovative ideas. Tasting notes and ratings for the new releases as follows:

Sauvignon Blanc 2024
Price: R215
One-third fermented and matured for seven months in older 300-litre barrels. White peach, grapefruit, kiwifruit, elderflower, blackcurrant and a touch of white pepper on the nose. The palate is rich with good fruit weight and coated acidity, the finish savoury. Alc: 13.5%.

Chardonnay 2023
Price: R310
Matured for 10 months in 300-litre barrels, 53% new; 25% MLF. Lemon, beeswax, vanilla and oak spice on the nose. Dense fruit and punchy acidity, finishing savoury. Textured and weighty – a style for those who prefer their Chardonnay with substance. Alc: 13.5%.
