Arendsig Inspirational Batch 3 Chenin Blanc 2019

By , 21 October 2020

Think Robertson and most people think Chardonnay when it comes to white wine but Lourens van der Westhuizen of Arendsig has made a smart Chenin Blanc as part of his top-end Inspirational Batch series for some time now, the 2019 currently available.

Grapes come from a block planted in 1994, winemaking involving spontaneous fermentation before maturation lasting 10 months in older oak. Deep yellow in colour, the nose shows stone fruit, orange, pineapple and spice plus some yeasty, waxy notes while the palate is sweet, rich and full balanced by tangy acidity. It’s deep and flavourful, and a good counterpoint to the lean, energetic style that currently prevails in many quarters. Price: R215 a bottle.

CE’s rating: 93/100.
