Beau Constantia Aidan 2018

By , 1 November 2024

Beau Constantia, situated just below Constantia Nek, epitomises the term “boutique winery”, home as it is to one of the Chefs Warehouse restaurants and with relatively small plantings of 11ha under vineyard.

Aidan 2018 (R380 a bottle) is pitched a being made in a “plush new-world style” and it delivers on this in the best way possible.  A blend of 32% Syrah, 28% Petit Verdot, 21% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Malbec and 7% Merlot, it was matured for 18 months in barrel, 42% new. The nose shows red and black berries, a hint of floral fragrance, vanilla, pepper and other spice while the palate is luscious and round with smooth tannins. It stops short of being too opulent and is still remarkably youthful compared to some of its counterparts from what was generally a hot vintage. Alcohol: 14.11%.

CE’s rating: 91/100.
