Bergsig Reserve Chenin Blanc 2014
By Christian Eedes, 28 July 2015
Bergsig is another of the nine Breedekloof wineries which have committed to the so-called Chenin Blanc Initiative aimed at uplifting the image of district. Grapes come from a vineyard approximately 24 years old, natural ferment and matured for some eight months in 300-litre French oak barrels, 90% new.
It’s a provocative wine. Some will no doubt find it dominated by oak but I like the resulting palate weight and texture. On the nose, there’s peach, some yeasty complexity, vanilla and spice plus a subtle earthiness. It’s rich and full on the palate with quite soft acidity before a savoury finish. Price: R125 a bottle.
Score: 90/100.
