Beyerskloof Traildust 2014

A family affair.

Beyers Truter of Beyerskloof has taken the name “Traildust” (from the observation by Western writer Louis L’Amour that “traildust is thicker than blood”) which used to apply to his Cape Winemakers Guild Pinotage and given it to a more modest blend of equal parts Pinotage and its two “parents” Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, the wine matured for 13 months in third-fill barrels.

There’s a definite malty note to the nose but also red cherries and plums plus some vague floral character. The palate is fruit driven with moderate acidity and smooth tannins. It’s not as light as the components might suggest but it is entirely gluggable and not bad value at R100 a bottle.

#WinemagRating: 85/100.
