Boplaas Cape Tawny Reserve Port 1997
By Christian Eedes, 5 July 2010
In terms of a major trade agreement between South Africa and the European Union ongoing for some ten years now, we agreed to desist from the use of the names Port, Sherry, Grappa and Ouzo by 2012 and they would pay €15 million (approximately R144 million) as compensation. Guess what? No money has been forthcoming to date…
Sunday night I drank the large part of a 375ml bottle of Boplaas Cape Tawny Reserve Port 1997 while listening to 1967 album Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by a group called The Beatles that I believe was quite popular back then. Both quite sublime.
The album features the song “With a little help from my friends” and I was given to think that it would be appropriate if this were played before the next round of SA – EU negotiations. “Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends/Mmm, gonna try with a little help from my friends/Ooh, I get high with a little help from my friends…”
