The entry on Jancisrobinson.com for Touriga Nacional reads as follows: “The most famous port variety grown also in the Dão region, and producing extremely concentrated, dark, tannic wines with a distinctive floral note in youth” and Boplaas Touriga Nacional Family Reserve 2012 is on the money.
A blend of 65% Stellenbosch, 23% Wellington and 12% Calitzdorp grapes, it was matured in a combination of first- and second-fill barrels for 26 months. On the nose, dark fruit, spice and scrub while the palate shows super-rich fruit, snappy acidity and plenty of tannic grip without being astringent. Price: R125 a bottle.
