Breedekloof Makers, the producer body consisting of various wineries from the region intent on uplifting their collective image through premium Chenin Blanc, recently showcased their new releases. The wines grow ever more sophisticated, the use of lees contact instead of new oak to add mid-palate a pleasing new development. The two stand-out wines were as follows:

Daschbosch Steen 2017
Price: R150
Fermented in older oak with commercial as well as wild yeast and matured for eight months. Citrus, stone fruit and some leesy complexity on the nose. Good palate weight and texture offset by tangy acidity. Layers of flavour, the finish long and savoury. Alc: 14.2%.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.

Opstal Carl Everson Chenin Blanc 2017
Price: R180
Spontaneous fermentation and maturation lasting 10 months in older 400-litre and 500-litre barrels. A complex and enticing nose with top notes of flowers and dried herbs before citrus, peach and apple plus a little earthiness. Really vivid and composed with lovely fruit purity and freshness, the best release since the 2014 vintage.

Editor’s rating: 93/100.
