Capelands current releases

By , 23 July 2024

Capelands is a Somerset West property acquired by Italian couple Johann Innerhofer and Laura Mauri in the early 2000s, with them undertaking to run accommodation, a restaurant and a 3ha unirrigated vineyard called Redstone, 85% planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% to Malbec.

Innerhofer has long been involved in the wine trade while the experienced Abe Beukes has consulted since 2019. Tasting notes and ratings for the current releases as follows:

CR1 Redstone 2019
Price: R480
95% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec. Matured for 30 months in barrel, partly new. Red and black berries, fresh herbs, violets plus hints of mushroom and oystershell. The palate shows good depth of fruit, lively acidity and fine-grained tannins – the oak is beautifully absorbed, the finish dry but not at all astringent. Well delineated and harmonious. Alc: 14%.

CE’s rating: 93/100.

Redstone Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
Price: R480
100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Matured for 36 months in barrel. Cassis, dried herbs and oystershell on the nose. Rich and full on the palate with bright acidity and velvety tannins. Pleasing weight, a slight mellowness beginning to creep in. Alc: 14.5%.

CE’s rating: 92/100.
