Costa del Swart Cinsault 2016
By Christian Eedes, 22 February 2018
Ewan Mackenzie (aka The Wine Thief) is a sommelier-at-large who also dabbles in the production of small-batch wines. One of his labels is Costa del Swart, the Cinsault 2016 made using grapes from a top Swartland vineyard and made by Martin Lamprecht of Marras Wines.
It’s pretty damn tasty – red cherry, leather, herbs and spice on the nose while the palate shows dense fruit, dense tannins and moderate acidity. It has the heft and substance (alcohol: 13.5%) that many examples of this variety lack making it very satisfying to drink. Approximate retail price: R200 a bottle.
Editor’s rating: 92/100.
